We didn’t want to give up real food just because we were eating out. And we didn’t want to stop eating out because we cared about real food.
But that choice often felt forced.
Eating out can mean guessing how food is prepared, scanning menus for clues, or settling for something that doesn’t quite align with how you want to eat. Whether you’re traveling or choosing where to eat close to home, finding meals made from real ingredients often takes more effort than it should.
Roots & Routes was created to make that choice feel possible again.
We wanted the kind of guide we wished existed — something we could actually use when finding where to eat. Places where eating well is already part of how the kitchen operates. Instead of focusing on popularity, trends, or reviews, we look at how food is actually made and how clearly that information is communicated.
We don’t rank restaurants by trends or social buzz — we look at how food is actually prepared and how clearly that information is shared.
Roots & Routes is for people who care about ingredients or want to know what’s in their food.
No matter how you eat or what style of diet you follow, this guide is built around one shared goal: real food, thoughtfully prepared.
Our approach is simple and intentionally selective.
We pay attention to what’s visible and verifiable: scratch-made cooking, traditional preparation methods, menus built around whole or minimally processed ingredients, and enough transparency to understand what’s on the plate.
Some menus are plant-forward. Some are mixed. Some include a wide range of preparations. What matters is that real, whole-ingredient food is genuinely possible — without needing to decode the menu or ask a dozen questions before ordering.
Roots & Routes exists because we wanted a way to eat out without giving something up. A guide that makes it easier to find restaurants where real food still has a place.
We’ll continue to grow thoughtfully — expanding to new cities, adding carefully vetted restaurants, and building tools that make eating well easier wherever you go.
